5610/M-B – THE DENTAL DAM
The DENTAL DAM,invented more than a century ago by Dr. Barnum,
is used in dentistry to reduce contamination due to the need for the area to remain dry and isolated.
The main function of the rubber dam is to isolate the tooth being treated from its environment, in particular from the bacteria of the oral cavity:this permits a clean and dry operative field from saliva or blood.
Another function of the rubber dam is to protect the patient’s airway from any materials which may fall into it during treatment. The dental dam improve the visibility of the tooth under treatment, reducing any risk for cheek and tongue.
